The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has launched “Year of the Pencil” to Boost Early Grade Learning on Thursday, 20 November 2025.

The launch took place at Regent Square Municipal Infant Primary School, with the mayor joined by the school’s leadership, pupils, and Council staff.

The initiative aimed at strengthening foundational learning for children by ensuring that children have access to essential educational tools.

Furthermore, the Initiative is supported by Develop Africa Sierra Leone and other partners. The programme will be distributing 100,000 pencils to 10,000 pupils across 20 primary schools in Freetown.

During the launch, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr stated that the initiative aimed at strengthening foundational learning for children by ensuring that children have access to essential educational tools.

“The launch was filled with excitement from pupils, teachers, and community members, reaffirming the city’s commitment to education and expanding opportunities for every child to succeed.” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr Explained.

Finally, the programme will continue its distribution of 100,000 pencils to 10,000 pupils across 20 primary schools in Freetown. Mayor Aki-Sawyerr also reaffirms her commitment to education and expanding opportunities for every child to succeed.
