The road construction project linking Hastings Junction to Kossoh Town has become a growing concern for residents and road users after the project appears to have been abandoned for a long period.

The construction work, which started in 2021, initially brought hope to residents and motorists who depend on this important road for their daily movement. During the early phase of the project, drainage systems were constructed, and coal tar was laid from Hastings Junction to the Kossoh Town bridge in Hastings.

However, from the bridge to Kossoh Town Junction, only the drainage structures were completed, while no coal tar was laid on that section of the road.

The situation has worsened over time. During the heavy rains experienced last year, the strong flow of water from the surrounding hills damaged significant portions of the coal tar that had already been laid. Additionally, the section of the road leading to Kossoh Town becomes heavily flooded whenever there is a downpour of rain, making it extremely difficult for vehicles and motorbikes to pass through.

Today, the road has deteriorated badly, with numerous potholes that are damaging commercial motorbikes, taxis, and private vehicles that use the route daily. For many commuters, especially during the rainy season, travelling along this road has become both dangerous and frustrating.

Residents and road users are therefore calling on the Sierra Leone Roads Authority and the Gento Group of Companies, the contractor responsible for the project, to provide a public explanation regarding the current status of the project.

The people deserve to know why the road project has been left incomplete for such a long time, and whether there are plans to resume and complete the work.

Infrastructure development plays a crucial role in improving transportation, economic activity, and the general well-being of communities. Leaving such an important road project unfinished not only affects mobility but also creates avoidable hardship for the people who depend on the road every day.

The relevant authorities must therefore take urgent action to address this matter and ensure that the Hastings – Kossoh Town road project is completed for the benefit of the community and road users.
