Over the years, the nation has witnessed the sudden and tragic deaths of dedicated friends, family members, and loved ones who committed themselves to serving Sierra Leone. While the grief belongs to the families and the officials they protected, the repeated loss of life raises questions that demand answers from the living.
The individuals lost were not merely staff members; they were consummate professionals and trusted confidants who provided invaluable peace of mind to the country’s leadership. A look at recent history reveals a grim timeline of sacrifice:
February 2023: Madam Kema Kanneh, a dedicated close protection guard for First Lady Fatima Maada Bio, died following a gruesome collision. Her convoy was rammed by a truck on the Makeni-Freetown highway. The First Lady mourned her as a daughter, while the State House Imam noted her devout faith and the military honored her as a gallant soldier.
May 2026: Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh lost his main driver, Alpha Umaru Jalloh, and military security detail Warrant Officer Kamara Jabbie. They were killed in a fatal crash along the Makeni-Gbomsamba road. The Vice President bid a tearful farewell to his driver, whom he considered a trusted brother, companion, and extended family member.
May 2026: Abdul Conteh, a close protection officer for Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, died in what was described as a “freak vehicle accident”. The Chief Minister described Conteh as his “shadow” who made him feel invincible, while his wife, Kate Krontiris, praised Conteh as a dedicated family man and public servant.
The repeated loss of hardworking individuals in these sensitive positions raises crucial questions that require honest dialogue. We must ask:
- Are these simply unfortunate, isolated accidents?
- Could there be systemic, underlying issues—such as convoy safety protocols, high-speed travel, or driver fatigue—that need urgent attention?
- Should there be a heightened level of concern for the safety of those serving in these high-pressure, sensitive roles?
- What actionable measures can be implemented to prevent such tragedies from recurring?
Raising these points is not an act of making accusations against any individual or office. Rather, it is a call for reflection, robust discussion, and a renewed commitment to improving safety and accountability for public servants.
These aides sacrifice long days and tireless nights in service of something bigger than themselves. They are tasked with ensuring the safety of the nation’s leaders. It is only fitting that the system also works tirelessly to ensure their safety.
If there are ideas, solutions, or recommendations that could help prevent future occurrences, they must be shared and implemented. Until then, may God grant mercy and forgiveness to the departed souls, and comfort their grieving families during these incredibly difficult times.
