Concerns have emerged within the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) following reports circulating on social media alleging that the party’s Acting Chairman, Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh, intends to swear in Mr. Logus Koroma as Deputy National Chairman and Mr. Abu Bakarr Kargbo, popularly known as ABS, into another national executive position.

The concerns were raised in an open letter addressed to Ambassador Yansaneh by APC member Sahr Philip Mani, who called on the Acting Chairman to ensure that all decisions concerning party leadership appointments are made in strict accordance with the APC Constitution (2022).

In the letter, Mani argued that the party’s constitution remains the supreme governing instrument of the APC and should not be set aside in favour of individual discretion or political interests.

He maintained that no party official, irrespective of position, possesses the authority to act outside the constitutional provisions.

Citing Article 47(IV)(f) of the APC Constitution, Mani stated that where the office of Deputy National Chairman becomes vacant, the National Advisory Committee (NAC) is required to convene within three months to elect an Acting Deputy National Chairman for the remainder of the term, with the election to be conducted by the Independent Elections Management Committee (IEMC).

He contended that the constitutional provision does not empower the Acting Chairman to appoint or swear in a Deputy National Chairman, warning that any such action would be inconsistent with the party’s constitution and could undermine its democratic governance.

Mani further appealed to the APC’s National Advisory Committee and the Independent Elections Management Committee to carry out their constitutional responsibilities independently and without external influence. He urged both bodies to uphold the integrity of the party’s internal democratic processes and resist any attempt to compromise their constitutional mandates.

The APC member also cautioned Ambassador Yansaneh against any move that could be perceived as circumventing the party’s constitution, stating that concerned party members would consider pursuing all lawful remedies, including judicial intervention, should any appointment be made outside the constitutional framework.

He concluded by stressing that respect for the APC Constitution is essential to preserving the party’s unity, credibility and democratic traditions, adding that leadership should be exercised in accordance with the rule of law rather than through actions that exceed constitutional authority.

As of the time of publication, Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh and the APC leadership had not publicly responded to the concerns raised in the open letter or the social media reports regarding the alleged appointments.
