All People’s Congress (APC) party has announced the formation of a seven-member committee tasked with reviewing Sierra Leone’s election management system. This development comes in the aftermath of a peace deal brokered last month between the APC and the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) to break the political deadlock.
The committee, comprised entirely of prominent APC members, will be led by Dr. Kaifala Marah, who serves as the Co-Chair. Other notable members include Dr. Richard Konteh, Ambassador Alimamy Petito Koroma, Ibrahim Mansaray Esq., David Fornah, Bernadette Kargbo, and Prince Tholley. These individuals, with diverse backgrounds and expertise, are entrusted with the critical task of evaluating the existing election management system and proposing recommendations for its improvement.
The decision to establish this committee stems from the commitments outlined in a communique signed during a three-day dialogue mediated by the international community. The move also follows discussions held at the APC party headquarters in response to a letter dated October 24, 2023, addressed to the chief minister. In the letter, it was explicitly stated that the committee formation is a direct response to the ongoing efforts for political reconciliation between the APC and the SLPP.
The committee’s mandate extends beyond an internal party initiative, as it aims to engage with various stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive evaluation. Among the stakeholders are the National Electoral Commission, political parties, and civil society organizations. This inclusive approach underscores the commitment to transparency and broad-based consultation in the pursuit of electoral reforms.
This development holds significance not only for the APC and SLPP but also for the broader political landscape of Sierra Leone. The evaluation and potential reforms proposed by the committee could have far-reaching implications for the democratic process in the country. As Sierra Leone strives for political stability and an inclusive electoral system, the work of this committee will be closely watched, and its recommendations may shape the future trajectory of elections in the nation.
