The Chief Minister Jacob Jusu Saffa, while speaking on the need for Sierra Leone to be self-sufficient in food, has asked for electorates to vote President Bio in the June elections to resuscitate the country’s ailing economy in months.

The former Finance Minister in the Bio Administration has affirmed that the Government will only use months to resuscitate the country’s economy.

“I cannot deny that there is high inflation but the Government has tried its best to keep the price (of commodities) stable,” Saffa said.

He asked locals to not only judge the Government by looking at the economy but also consider other sectors like human capital and energy developments.

The Chief Minister said inflation is felt more in Freetown than in the provinces.

“There is price rice in Freetown because we don’t produce anything unlike typical rural areas,” he said.

During an interview with Radio Democracy, the minister revealed that the Government has made significant gains in agriculture in Bio’s first term.

“I, myself, did over 50 acres of land this year,” he said.

Saffa added that he has 750 acres of land of which he has donated 500 of that to communities.

“We spend over 250 million US Dollars every year to import rice,” he said

The Chief Minister said the Government is concerned over the nation achieving food sufficiency in the next couple over years.

“We (the Government) already have a lot of tractors – we have access to more tractors than ever before,” Saffa said.

He added that there are over 500 tractors available for farmers in the field.

During a visit to Moyamba District in February, President Bio promised to invest in agriculture if he wins the June 2023 presidential election.

Some locals reacting to the interview have criticised the Chief Minister of being unrealistic. Some asked him to reminisced on his promise prior to the 2018 election when he claimed that the Bio administration would solve the country’s hunger needs.
