While the Political Parties Regulatory Commission (PPRC) banned political parties from holding street rallies, former Anti-corruption commissioner Ady Macauley gives the APC’s preference for street rallies.
Ady Macauley starts by stating that the APC is a big political party with 80% of Freetown’s population adding that no specific location will be enough for them unless the street and it’s their constitutional right.
He made these clarifications during the Good Morning Salone Program on radio Democracy 98.1 fm in Freetown, when asked about the impact of street rallies on the APC.
Answering the question, he stated that it is not about influence, but about the right of Sierra Leoneans to move freely and assemble when and how they want.
According to the PPRC ban on political rallies gives citizens a better choice, which Mr Macauley refutes saying the PPRC bans dancing from one place to another and refers to football clubs and street masquerades.
He was asked if football and party rallies were the same thing, citing hate speech and immoral music, but Macauley said that football was more competitive than politics and stated that the PPRC should not limit people’s happiness due to minor risk. that everything has its risks.
He was asked why all the points presented by the PPRC which according to them are for the peace and security of the country and why the street rallies are still entrusted to the APC, don’t you have other options?
He answered ; “It is our right as Sierra Leoneans and political parties to enjoy the provisions of the constitution and that is what we are insisting on. Taking legal action against PPRC is on the table it’s one of the options if we believe it’s necessary we will go with it”.
He referred to the rule of the Supreme Court ruling on banning vehicles moving on electing day.
