President Julius Maada Bio has sent a strong message to those eyeing the country’s top leadership through what he termed “mago mago” politics, declaring that anyone seeking to succeed him through underhanded means should prepare to wait.
Speaking at the official opening of the new Sierra Leone People’s Party office in Koidu, President Bio emphasized that leadership succession in Sierra Leone must follow democratic principles and constitutional order, not political manipulation or secret dealings.
The President’s comments come amid increasing speculation over who could emerge as the ruling party’s flagbearer in the next electoral cycle. Without naming anyone directly, Bio warned against attempts to gain political advantage through backdoor arrangements, stressing that the leadership of the nation should only be determined by the will of the people.
He also used the event to encourage party loyalists to remain steadfast and united, noting that the opening of the new SLPP office in Kono represents the party’s commitment to strengthening its grassroots presence across the country.
Political observers say the statement is likely to fuel further debate within the ruling party, as conversations around succession continue to gather momentum.
Many supporters interpreted the President’s remarks as a pointed caution to individuals already positioning themselves for the next presidential contest.
