The main opposition party APC Presidential Candidate for the 2023 election, Dr. Samura Kamara has said that security forces in Sierra Leone are very trigger happy.

He made this disclosure during his nomination at the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone’s Headquarter on Tower Hill in Freetown.

The APC candidate, however, condemned the modus operandi of security forces in dealing with his supporters.

“We were coming here (ECSL’s Office) and out of nowhere they started hearing gunshots and this is uncalled for,” he stated.

He admonished the ECSL Commissioner to look into such while stating that that action by the security forces is an “indicator that trigger violence”.

“I want appeal to you the Commissioner, management and staff of this noble institution to ensure that we have peaceful elections,” Kamara pleaded

Dr. Kamara also promised ECSL’s Commissioner, Mohamed Kenewui Konneh that the APC party is peaceful and promised that they are committed to maintaining the peace of the nation ahead of the elections.

“I want to assure you that there will never be a moment when the APC party will orchestrate violence,” he said.

He called on the Commission to ensure that the elections are free and fair.

“We must ensure we give the electorates the freedom and space to exercise their judgment without any interference particularly from the security forces,” Kamara said.

He ended by promising that his party is committed to upholding all the principles of a free and fair elections.

Both the APC and the incumbent SLPP’s Presidential Candidates and their running mates went through successful nominations at ECSL on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

According to the ECSL other parties will continue their nomination until 9th May 2023 as the country edge towards the June polls.
