A concerned member of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in the UK and Ireland has issued a strong response to a memo from the party’s National Secretary General, Umaru Napoleon Koroma.

The member criticized the use of the word “instructed” in the memo, describing it as patronizing and disrespectful to the foundation of the party’s participation.

In their statement, the member emphasized that SLPP UK & Ireland members are not subservient to the National Secretary General but are contributing members who have voluntarily committed to the party.

The use of “instructed,” they argued, undermines their autonomy and dignity as engaged party members abroad, likening the language to that found in a military command structure rather than a democratic political organization.

The member further expressed concerns regarding Mr. Koroma’s insistence that the affairs of SLPP UK & Ireland, particularly regional elections, be governed by the 2020 National Constitution of the SLPP.

They pointed out that this constitution has not been adopted by the UK & Ireland region, which continues to operate under its own 2014 SLPP UK & Ireland By-Laws. This move to override local bylaws was deemed not only an overreach but also a constitutional insult, potentially leading to legal ramifications.

The member warned that Mr. Koroma’s memo could be viewed as interference in ongoing legal proceedings in the UK regarding the governance of SLPP UK & Ireland. They asserted that any attempt to impose foreign legal interpretations on sovereign UK judicial matters could be considered contempt under UK law.

They concluded their response with a firm declaration: SLPP UK & Ireland is an integral part of the global SLPP family, with rights, laws, and a voice. The member vowed that they would not be dictated to, nor would they accept attempts to undermine their constitution or autonomy.
