The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Prof. Alpha Tejan Wurie, together with his Deputy Minister, Mr. Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara, has handed Le 30,000,000, in addition to trophies and certificates, to the Champions and Runners-up of the Intervarsity Sports Competition as star prize for both football and volleyball. Certificates were as well given to all participants of the tournament.
Le10,000,000 was handed to Njala University as Champions of the football tournament and Le5,000,000 to University of Sierra Leone as Runners-up. Le7,500,000 was handed to Njala University’s Male Volleyball Team and USL’s Female Volleyball Team each (as Champions respectively).
The event occurred on 12th March 2022 immediately after the football final between University of Sierra Leone (USL) and Njala University at the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Academy, Njala University emerging as Champion of the football tournament after a penalty shootout.
The tournament, which commenced on 4th March, 2022 involved tertiary institutions from all regions across the country, in a bid to enhance a cohesive atmosphere among students.
Speaking to the participating teams, Prof. Wurie commended all participants from the various colleges and universities for exhibiting peace and friendliness throughout the competition, expressing delight over the involvement of both public and private institutions in the process.
“You should see these games as the initial stages of national cohesion. The hope is for you the young to recognize that this country will do well when you can do well,” he admonished the participants.
