It is undoubtedly the first time ever in the history of Sierra Leone to have a functioning National Female Premier League under the leadership of Asmaa James. As the league kick-off took place at the Museum field, Makeni on Saturday 15th October 2022.
The professional women’s league was launched with a match in the northern city of Makeni kicking off a six month season with 12 clubs from across the country.
Ahead of the league’s kickoff this past weekend, the National Female Premier League Board har a meeting with the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) on Wednesday, president Bio said his government takes women’s empowerment very seriously and would work to elevate women’s football in the country to international standards.
The Mena Queens of Makeni battled the Kahunla Queens from Kenema during the opening match on Saturday with Sierra Leone’s first lady, Fatima Bio, in attendance at the crowded Wusum Sports Stadium in Makeni. The match ended in a 1:0 win in favour of Kahunla Queens.
