Jude Bellingham scored twice in just 98 seconds as England survived a hostile Azteca Stadium, a one-hour weather delay, and a red card to beat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 and reach the World Cup quarter-finals.
England became the second team to eliminate a co-host in the Round of 16, following Morocco’s victory over Canada. They will face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Bellingham’s brace in the 36th and 38th minutes silenced the partisan crowd of more than 80,000 at a venue where Mexico had been unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches. Harry Kane added a third from the penalty spot in the 60th minute, despite England having been reduced to 10 men just six minutes earlier.
Mexico fought back through Julian Quiñones before half-time, and Raúl Jiménez from the spot, but England held firm through 11 minutes of stoppage time to secure the victory .
The match was delayed by an hour due to thunderstorms in Mexico City. When it finally kicked off, Mexico dominated the opening stages, with Raúl Jiménez forcing a fine save from Jordan Pickford early on.
Against the run of play, England struck. In the 36th minute, Bukayo Saka chipped a precise cross into the box, and Bellingham finished with a diving header at the back post. Just 98 seconds later, Kane dropped deep to receive the ball and played a perfect pass through the Mexican defence for Bellingham to fire home his second.
Mexico pulled one back in the 42nd minute. Ezri Konsa struggled to clear a free-kick, and Julián Quiñones smashed the ball into the net to make it 2-1. Quiñones equalled Javier Hernández and Luis Hernández as Mexico’s joint-top scorer in World Cup history with four goals .
England started the second half on top, with Nico O’Reilly striking the post from the edge of the area. But the game turned in the 54th minute when Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Jesús Gallardo after a VAR review. Both benches emptied into confrontation as the referee consulted the pitch-side monitor.
Despite being down to 10 men, England were awarded a penalty in the 60th minute when Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel took down Anthony Gordon in the area. Kane converted from the spot for his sixth goal of the tournament, moving level with Gerd Müller for fifth on the all-time World Cup scoring list with 14 goals.
Mexico responded from the spot themselves in the 69th minute after Kane committed a foul on Brian Gutierrez. Raúl Jiménez converted with a stutter-step approach to make it 3-2 .
Mexico attacked relentlessly over the final 21 minutes, plus 11 minutes of stoppage time. Pickford made several crucial saves while Bellingham hooked a César Montes header over the bar. England held on to secure the victory.
