The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed a list of FIFA-badged referees for the TotalEnergies men’s under-20 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cairo and Egypt exempting Sierra Leonean Referees.

46 referees and assistant referees were initially selected (23 per category), two women referees, four assistant referees and six video assistant referees are on the List of Match Officials

The referees and assistant referees underwent a preparatory course in Cairo from 13-18 February following their arrival on 12 February.

A final list of names consisting of 16 referees, 18 assistant referees and six video assistant referees (VAR) has been released by CAF. The TotalEnergies U20 Africa Cup of Nations commenced on 19 February to 11 March 2023 in Egypt.

The match officials are from 30 different countries.

The list has a strong bias towards young match officials – a deliberate act by CAF and something in line with CAF’s commitment to developing world-class referees in Africa in the near future.

The CAF Referees department has also integrated some African match officials selected for FIFA global events – to use the competition as a preparation phase ahead of their assignments.

The list includes two female referees; South Africa’s Akhona Makalina and Morocco’s Bouchra Karboubi, female assistant referees Jermoumi Fatiha, Hamdi Soukaina from Morocco, Mali’s Fanta Idrissa Kone and Egypt’s Yara Atef.
