Former Swedish Golden Boot winner Mohamed Buya Turay has marked his return to Sierra Leonean football with a goal on his debut for Star Sport Academy, helping his new club secure a crucial victory and maintain their lead at the top of the Leone Rock Premier League standings.
The Sierra Leone international came on just before halftime in Sunday’s match against Wusum Stars at the Wusum Ground in Makeni and wasted no time making an impact, finding the back of the net in the 44th minute to give his team a vital advantage.
Turay’s composed finish was followed by a spectacular long-range strike from Sheka Sesay, doubling Star Sport Academy’s lead and sealing the win that extends their position atop the domestic standings after week seventeen of the season.
The 29-year-old striker officially joined Star Sport Academy earlier this month, bringing with him a wealth of international experience. Chairman Ing. Yankuba Jusu Tarawally expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, describing Turay as “a dynamic attacking player with remarkable speed and an impressive presence in front of the goal.” The forward will wear the number 95 jersey for his new club.
Turay’s football journey began in his native Sierra Leone with local club FC Mattia before he made his professional debut in 2014 with Sweden’s Juventus IF. During his initial stint in Swedish football, he made 25 appearances and scored an remarkable 32 goals.
He progressed through Sweden’s second-tier league between 2014 and 2018, representing Västerås SK, AFC Eskilstuna, and Dalkurd FF before securing a move to Belgian Jupiler Pro League club Sint-Truiden in 2018. A loan spell with Djurgarden IF in Sweden’s Allsvenskan in 2019 proved particularly fruitful, with Turay scoring 15 goals in 29 appearances and earning the prestigious Golden Boot award as Sweden’s top scorer.
The striker later ventured to the Chinese Super League, first joining Hebei China Fortune in 2020 and subsequently signing with Henan Songshan Longmen.
Now back on home soil, Turay’s immediate impact suggests his wealth of experience will prove invaluable as Star Sport Academy pursues domestic glory. His debut goal not only secured three points but also demonstrated the quality the former Swedish Golden Boot winner brings to the Sierra Leonean top flight.
