Sierra Leone’s head coach, Mohamed Kallon, in an interview, addressed the absence of key players Samuel Bekoe and Mohamed Fogbawa from the squad that faced Guinea-Bissau and the squad that will line up for the upcoming match against Egypt in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In the interview, Kallon revealed that Bekoe did not travel with the team due to unresolved personal issues that prevented his participation. The Leone Stars coach said that the situation needed to be addressed before he could rejoin the squad.

Kallon also spoke highly of Mohamed Fogbawa’s recent recovery from an ankle injury, praising his strong performances in training. However, despite Fogbawa’s improved form, Kallon confirmed that the player was not fully fit for the qualifiers and, out of caution, chose not to risk his inclusion in the squad.

Sierra Leone will now look to secure crucial points against Egypt, after a convincing 3-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau on Thursday evening.

The Ghanaian-born Bekoe, plays for East End Lions after a successful stint with FC Johansen. The towering midfielder is considered a maestro at the heart of the Killers’ midfield with his technique and skills winning admirers including Mohamed Kallon.

Fogbawa has had a notable career, previously playing for Bo Rangers, where he gained recognition for his impressive skills and pace. Currently, he is excelling with Old Edwardians in the Sierra Leone Premier League as a box-to-box midfielder. Unfortunately, due to this injury, he will have to postpone his debut with the Leone Stars national team for a bit longer.

Fogbawa’s fans are, however, optimistic of his chances of breaking into the Leone Stars first team considering Coach Kallon’s trust in home-based players. The gaffer took 15 home-based players to camp for this International break period —the highest for any Leone Stars coach in recent times.
