The Leone Rock Premier League, formerly known as the Sierra Leone Premier League, failed to secure a spot among the top men’s football leagues in Africa for 2023, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).
IFFHS is an organisation that chronicles the history and records of association football, founded in 1974 by Alfredo Poge in Leipzig. It rates the competitive edge of leagues and for the current rating, the Italian Serie A is the global strongest league, while Egypt tops Africa and is rated 20 in the world.
Within Africa, Morocco’s Botola League followed closely behind Egypt, while Algeria, Tunisia, South Africa, and Tanzania filled out the top five. Notably, Nigeria secured the seventh spot, with Angola, Zambia, and Cote d’Ivoire being the only other West African leagues to crack the top 10.
The top five strongest leagues in the world are Italian Serie A, the English Premier League, Spanish LaLiga, Brazil’s Serie A and the German Bundesliga.
While the Leone Rock Premier League may not have made the cut this year, the ranking provides valuable insights into the continent’s evolving football landscape. The presence of several West African leagues among the top 10 highlights the region’s growing competitiveness and potential for future success.
