On Thursday, July 10, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) distributed 40 motorbikes to eight district football associations Kailahun, Kono, Moyamba, Bonthe, Falaba, Koinadugu, Karene, and Kambia as part of a pilot project aimed at enhancing football activities and generating income.
The initiative is part of a larger project involving 160 motorbikes across 16 districts and 5 regions, designed to empower districts to manage their own football development. Each beneficiary district received five motorbikes.
SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima stated that the motorbikes must be used strictly for income-generating activities tied to football development, operating under a cost-recovery system. Districts are required to submit monthly financial reports to the SLFA Finance Department and their respective Regional Football Associations to ensure transparency and accountability.
The remaining eight districts are expected to receive their motorbikes within the next three months. The project is aimed at promoting sustainable football development and extending its benefits nationwide.
The donation of the 40 motorbikes reportedly provided by FIFA and channeled through the SLFA is part of a broader strategy to strengthen local football operations, especially in hard-to-reach districts like Falaba and Koinadugu.
However, there’s a twist. Reports suggest that many of these motorbikes, which arrived in mid-2024, have been left unused and exposed to the elements, raising concerns about resource management. Observers are calling for greater accountability to ensure these assets serve their intended purpose.
