Last week, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Board of Ethics launched an investigation into allegations of an ethics code violation by SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima.

The probe comes in response to Brima’s participation in a political rally held on May 2, 2023, at the Brima Attouga Stadium in celebration of the nomination of the flag bearer and Running Mate of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) for the upcoming elections.

During the rally, President Brima, who attended the event in his capacity as SLFA President, delivered a speech that has since gone viral.

In an excerpt from the video, Brima cautioned SLPP supporters not to engage in fights over football, assuring them that the sport will be given due attention.

He emphasized that as football stakeholders, they do not dictate who people should vote for, but rather support those who have proven themselves and will continue to bring positive change. He urged supporters to inform their children that the man providing for them is President Julius Maada Bio.

“We, as the football family, whether APC, SLPP or any other party, are here to express our gratitude. We are not campaigning because we are focused on playing football. However, we are here to express our thanks for the good deeds you have done, as the scripture says that good deeds shall follow you. The time has come; watch and see. It is not about making noise, but you will witness it in the voting ballot box,” stated Brima during his speech.

The Sierra Leone Football Association Board of Ethics has deemed the president’s actions potentially breaching the Ethics Code and Regulations governing football administration. They have formally requested an explanation from President Brima regarding his involvement in the political rally and his statements made during the event.

The investigation aims to determine whether Brima’s actions constitute a violation of the SLFA’s ethics guidelines, which generally prohibit officials from engaging in partisan political activities that may compromise their impartiality and the integrity of the sport.
