The Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation, in partnership with the World Bank through the Sierra Leone Digital Transformation Project, has begun an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Readiness Assessment to evaluate the country’s preparedness for adopting AI technologies.
The assessment, described as one of the first of its kind, looks at Sierra Leone’s capabilities across three areas: infrastructure (compute), skills and talent (capacity), and policy and regulation (context).

As part of the process, the Ministry hosted the World Bank team in Freetown for the presentation of initial findings. Stakeholder meetings were also held with representatives from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector to gather input on opportunities and challenges.

Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Salima Monorma Bah, said the focus is not simply on integrating AI into existing systems but on identifying how the technology can address national challenges.
The outcome of the study is expected to guide the development of a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which will outline Sierra Leone’s approach to responsible and inclusive AI adoption.
