Content creators in Sierra Leone can now earn money directly from TikTok, according to a recent announcement by Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh.
While the development opens new digital revenue streams, officials note that strict eligibility criteria may initially limit the number of creators who can cash in.
Dr. Sengeh confirmed that local users are now eligible for up to three different TikTok monetization programs. However, he highlighted a significant hurdle for the local creator economy: the platform’s most lucrative payout tier requires a minimum of 100,000 video views.
According to the Chief Minister, only a “handful” of Sierra Leonean creators currently meet this high-volume threshold, underscoring the need for local influencers to scale their reach.

The activation of monetization features marks a milestone for the government’s digital integration efforts. Dr. Sengeh urged citizens to capitalize on the new tools, stating, “We have always told our folks to focus on content creation and leave the policy to us.”
The announcement also shed light on the massive footprint the video-sharing app holds in the country. TikTok is currently the largest social media platform in Sierra Leone, accounting for an estimated 30% of the nation’s total internet bandwidth consumption.
