The government of Sierra Leone, with the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), has issued a public notice regarding Mpox safety regulations for Public Spaces, Institutions, and Places of Worship. Effective Date, 5th May 2025.
According to NPHA, to stop the spread of Mpox in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Agency have issued the following safety rules. These apply to all public spaces: workplaces, schools, and places of worship.
Furthermore, the general public is hereby informed that these rules are applied: Public Places- Markets, shops, transport hubs, event venues, community centers, Institutions- Schools, universities, government, and private offices, correctional facilities, Religious Gatherings- churches, mosques, temples, and similar venues.
The government wishes that these key regulations be followed by the latter:
Clean Hands & Clean Spaces, provide handwashing stations at all entry and exit points, clean surfaces that are touched often, daily, Display Mpox prevention posters in local languages, and watch for Symptoms & Report and Report signs of Mpox: fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes. Support contact tracing and monitor exposed persons for 21 days.
Also, keep it Sanitary by disinfecting shared items and spaces every day, and keep all handwashing stations clean and supplied. Further adding to all citizens should keep a Safe Distance: Avoid overcrowding at least 1 meter (3 feet) between people, Stagger services or gatherings where possible
And Avoid Physical Contact: No handshakes or hugs, and Anyone with symptoms should stay home and call 117 or visit a health facility. The government is asking the general public to share the Message and Spread health information during school, work, religious, and community events. Educate everyone about MPox symptoms and how to prevent it and protect the Vulnerable group.
Finally, the government wishes to advise the general public that Failure to follow these rules may lead to: Fines, Closure of premises which is Prosecution under the Public Health Act, 2022. Also, be warned that Authorized health officers may inspect and take action as needed, From the Government of Sierra Leone.
