The Parliament of Sierra Leone has reportedly confirmed Abdul Aziz as the new Auditor-General of the Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL).
The decision, made on Thursday, 17th July, 2025, was notably unanimous, reflecting broad support from both the ruling party and the opposition.
Aziz’s confirmation was praised for his proven track record in public service, particularly during his time as Acting Auditor-General. Members of Parliament commended his leadership and the high-quality audit reports he delivered, which have significantly contributed to enhancing transparency and accountability within public institutions.
Deputy Leader of Government Business, Bashiru Silikie, expressed strong support for President Julius Maada Bio’s nomination of Aziz, stating, “He is the right man for the job; qualified, experienced, and proven.”
Silikie also hinted at possible legislative reforms aimed at strengthening the ASSL, including the potential for the agency to gain prosecutorial powers similar to those of the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Emerson Sahr Lamina, Deputy Leader II of Government Business from Kono District, echoed these sentiments, asserting that Abdul Aziz is dedicated to eliminating financial malpractice. “He is not a witch hunter. But if there are witches in the system, they will be hunted,” he remarked.
The opposition also voiced its support for Aziz. Abdul Kargbo, the Minority Leader from the All People’s Congress (APC), asserted the significance of the ASSL’s work in legislative oversight. “Audit reports have become essential reading in this Parliament. They help us hold institutions accountable and improve public service delivery,” he stated.
Abdul Karim Kamara, APC Whip and MP for Port Loko District, further praised the technical rigor and accuracy of recent audit reports under Aziz’s leadership. “What we’ve seen in recent reports, especially the performance evaluations and financial breakdowns, gives us confidence in his leadership,” he noted.
With his official appointment, Abdul Aziz takes charge of the ASSL, with high expectations exhibited by the Parliament to uphold his role as a vigilant overseer of public finance and governance.
