Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation, Rex Bonapha, has announced the introduction of a digital payment system for the Waka Fine Buses, marking a shift towards cashless transactions in public transportation.
The announcement came during the ministry’s weekly press briefing at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown.
According to Bonapha, the system is expected to go into August and aims to reduce cash handling, curb petty financial misconduct, and improve efficiency for daily commuters.
All buses under the Waka Fine service will be equipped with digital payment machines, through a partnership between the Ministry and Metro Transport Company Limited (MTCL), the private operator of the fleet.
“The goal is to address common issues like conductors refusing to return change, while also promoting transparency and convenience,” Bonapha told reporters.
He clarified that the buses are not government-owned but run by MTCL, a consortium of various transport stakeholders.
The digital payment initiative is part of the broader World Bank-funded Integrated Urban Mobility Project targeting improvements in the public transport sector.

Sound good, but there’s need also to get more buses 🚌 including ones for shorter distances…
But why the police at lumely collecting 100 Leone from Kekeh riders and Congo cross is collecting 50 Leone from Kekeh riders from Wilkinson road, claiming that, the road is for only government bus not Kekeh. They are collecting that money every day to any Kekeh that use that Wilkinson road root. And if you refuse to give pay the complete money, they will charge to court by saying that, he used the CBD root. And remember that, the bus are not government own. The lumely police station is too much desperate for that le100. Please let the government help on this.
This is a call to concern for the government to quickly look in to it, it has been approved by Parliament that all kekeh, podapoda drivers should buck to the POLICE 🚓 🚨 in the morning and afternoon?
Because this issue has becoming worst even to the extend we the passengers our lives are in danger. After bucking these podapoda drivers and kekeh riders they will never observe the appropriate road precaution.
I hate hell but not more than waka fine.
The waka fine dey gee dis government bad name, road wey den nor make, na e den dey ban people not for use am. Pure disadvantage.
They said “waka fine” are not government vehicles but it is the government that ban other vehicles not to use the roads during some busy hours.
“Why d government nor lef that private company make e ban d other commercial vehicles make we see if e go work” just because government dey get percent on the money, e nor care whether the masses suffer or nor. ”
They drive their private vehicles with comfort while the masses are in a gorrila fight to have transport. Wake fine have added the suffering of the masses by imposing ban on the “poda, Kekeh” and other commercial vehicles.
Wuna really heartless, we bin dey suffer for get transport den wuna don add to the sufferness. Na God go judge wuna next world 🌎.
If you know say waka fine business na honest and good business, den wuna allow fair competition for happen. Na civilise robbery wuna dey do, way wuna call business.
