Police in Freetown have intensified enforcement of the ‘Right of Way’ regulations at key busy intersections across the city in a bid to improve traffic discipline, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety.
The operation, led by the Regional Police Commander for Freetown-East, AIG Francis Brima Meinday, is currently targeting high-traffic areas including Ferry Junction and PWD Roundabout, both known for heavy gridlock during peak hours.
According to police, the initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 11, which promotes safe, inclusive, and well-organized cities.
On Wednesday, the Harbour Police Division’s Operations Team, commanded by ASP Francis Tommy, was deployed to manage vehicle flow and prevent traffic-related disorder. The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) also worked alongside officers to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

ASP Tommy acknowledged cooperation from motorists, traders, and residents, stating that joint community and police efforts yield better results. AIG Meinday added that the measures are aimed at saving lives, not only regulating traffic.
Police have indicated that the enforcement campaign will be expanded to other key areas of the city in the coming weeks. Members of the public are being urged to adhere to traffic laws to help create a safer and more orderly urban environment.
The initiative follows an increase in road accidents in urban Sierra Leone, with authorities warning that violations of traffic rules will be met with appropriate legal action.
