The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) has officially rolled out its ‘Grant for Growth’ Project, providing capacity-building training for over 120 athletes, coaches, administrators, and technical officials across the country.

The project, initiated and supported by World Athletics, is aimed at strengthening knowledge and skills in key areas of the sport, including safeguarding, Kids’ Athletics, ethics, compliance, and technical coaching.

According to SLAA’s Head of Media, Dalton Shyllon, the initiative includes a comprehensive safeguarding training course designed for all personnel involved in the Kids’ Athletics programme. Participants from the Eastern, Southern, Northern, North-West, and Western Area regions took part in the sessions.

Shyllon noted that the programme is intended to ensure that all member associations of World Athletics are equipped with fundamental principles of athletics management and delivery. He underscored that safeguarding plays a crucial role in creating safe and supportive environments for children to develop as athletes. The training focused on preventive measures to reduce risks of abuse, harassment, and exploitation within athletics programmes.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants received online certificates from World Athletics, officially qualifying them to deliver Kids’ Athletics programmes nationwide.

The ‘Grant for Growth’ Project forms part of World Athletics’ wider strategy to enhance grassroots athletics and promote ethical standards across its member federations.
