Matilda Jusu has been appointed as the new Head of the National Office for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Sierra Leone.

Her appointment is the first time a woman has taken up this role in the country.

She brings over 20 years of experience to the position, having started her career at WAEC in 2002 as Assistant Registrar and Subject Officer in the Test Development Division. Since then, she has worked in different areas of the Council’s operations, steadily rising through the ranks.

In 2011, she became the first Branch Controller for WAEC’s newly opened Kenema office. This was also the first time a woman had served in that capacity in Sierra Leone. Between 2013 and 2017, she led the Results Verification Unit and was responsible for overseeing Professional Examinations. From 2017 to 2021, she managed post-examination activities for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), one of the Council’s largest and most critical exams. From 2021 until her latest appointment on August 21, 2025, she served as the Acting Head of the Test Development Division.

Her academic background reflects a strong foundation in education and leadership. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Sociology and a Diploma in Adult Education from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. She also earned a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Ghana. In addition, she holds a certificate from the Cambridge Assessment Network and has taken part in several professional training programmes in areas related to assessment, education management, and organizational development.

Matilda Jusu is known for her consistent work ethic, clear sense of responsibility, and steady leadership across her years at the Council. Colleagues who have worked with her point to her attention to detail and her ability to manage teams and systems effectively. Over the years, she has played a key role in improving examination processes and maintaining order during critical periods in the academic calendar.

As Head of the National Office, she will now oversee WAEC’s activities in Sierra Leone, including exam development, coordination, results management, and other administrative duties. Her appointment is the first time a woman has led the WAEC National Office in Sierra Leone. It comes during a period of ongoing changes in the education sector, where exam systems and administration processes continue to be developed and managed across the country.

WAEC Sierra Leone conducts several local and international exams every year. The National Office is responsible for the planning, coordination, and administration of these activities. Matilda Jusu will now take on the role of overseeing these responsibilities.
