Through the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), fruitful discussions with the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU), schools nationwide will reopen on Monday, 8th September 2025, in line with the official schedule for the 2025/2026 academic year.

On the 4th September 2025, His Excellency the Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, convened a high level meeting at his office with the leadership of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), representatives from the Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU), the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), and the Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (CPASS). The meeting addressed concerns raised by the Union, particularly the issue of backlog subsidy payments.

As a result of these constructive engagements, the Government has disbursed backlog subsidies for the second and third terms and established Committees with clear responsibilities to address the remaining issues raised by the Union.

These commitments have paved the way for the consensus that schools will reopen as earlier scheduled on Monday, 8th September 2025, ensuring uninterrupted continuity in the education of pupils across Sierra Leone.

The Government reaffirms its steadfast commitment to supporting teachers, strengthening the education sector, and prioritizing the welfare of learners. The Ministry commends the SLTU, CPASS, TSC, and all education stakeholders for their dedication, collaboration, and tireless efforts in safeguarding the future of our children.
