The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), through its Directorate of Monitoring and Research, has commenced a nationwide monitoring and data collection exercise in Correctional Centres across the country.

The HRCSL team led by Vice Chairperson, Victor Idrissa Lansana Esq., visited Correctional Centres in Kenema, Kailahun, and Kono on September 2 and 3.

The delegation also included the Deputy Executive Secretary, Frederick Kamara; Senior Human Rights Officer, Sheku Alaka T. Mansaray; Human Rights Officer, John Kamanda Conteh; Assistant Human Rights Officer, Aminata Lamin; and the Deputy Director and Head of Eastern Region Office, Vandi Saidu, among others.

The initiative, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), forms part of a research project titled “Human Rights Behind Bars.”

The exercise aims to evaluate how well the rights of inmates are respected and upheld within correctional facilities, in line with national laws, regional commitments, and international human rights standards.

Furthermore, the monitoring exercise will cover 18 Correctional Centres across Sierra Leone’s five regions. Beyond evaluating compliance with human rights standards, the research will investigate structural and systemic challenges undermining the effectiveness of correctional services, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that the rights and dignity of all inmates are respected and protected at all times.
