Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has hailed stakeholders for their inputs during the consultations for the data protection legislation in Freetown.
Bah, praised the participants for their contributions at the closing of the consultation process for the Western Area.
“Good laws produce good results,” Minister Bah said, thanking various interest groups for their input on the proposed legislation.
The new bill, titled the Right to Access Information and Data Protection Commission Act, 2025, is designed to protect citizens’ data while bolstering the nation’s digital security.
The Ministry of Information is spearheading the initiative with support from Irish Aid and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The minister expressed optimism about the new law’s potential, stating, “If the spirit in this room is upheld, then Sierra Leone is set to have a strong data protection law and a competent commission to deliver on its mandate.”
The consultation, held at the Miatta Conference Press Conference Room in Freetown, is the first step in a nationwide process that will be rolled out in the coming weeks. Attendees included representatives from media organizations, the security sector, telecommunications companies, and civil society groups.
