The Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu, has welcomed a delegation of Spanish doctors from the Surgeons in Action Foundation during a courtesy visit at the Kingtom Senior Officers’ Mess, ahead of their week-long free surgical campaign at the Police Hospital.
The team, led by Dr. Immaculada Gimenes Jimenes, is in Sierra Leone to conduct over 200 free surgical operations at the Police Hospital in Kingtom.
Introducing the delegation, the Deputy Director and Medical Superintendent of the Police Hospital, ASP Dr. John Mumuneh Konteh, praised the foundation for its sustained support to Sierra Leone’s health sector.
He noted that just three years ago, the hospital lacked the capacity for advanced procedures, but under the leadership of IGP Sellu, it has undergone major transformation, with modern facilities now making complex surgeries possible locally.
Welcoming the visiting doctors, IGP Sellu expressed deep appreciation for their continued commitment to Sierra Leone and highlighted that the hospital’s services go far beyond police officers to benefit the wider public.
“The Police Hospital has grown into a teaching hospital because of the improvements in infrastructure and the availability of world-class surgical equipment,” the IGP said. He commended the foundation for choosing the Police Hospital for the eighth time, stressing that their efforts have significantly improved the hospital’s standards.
In her response, Dr. Immaculada thanked the IGP for the warm reception and praised Sierra Leone’s hospitality, which she described as the best in the region. She assured that her team would give their utmost during the free surgical campaign.
The engagement concluded with a conducted tour of the Police Hospital, where journalists were shown state-of-the-art equipment, including an anesthesia machine donated by the Surgeons in Action Foundation.
