The National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA) has announced the commencement of the third and fourth-quarter nationwide distribution of Free Healthcare commodities for 2025. Which follows the successful completion of the first and second- quarter distributions earlier this year.
The exercise, which starts on Friday, September 26, will be launched at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital and the Ola During Children’s Hospital (PCMH) before extending across the country. The initiative is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted access to essential medicines and medical supplies.
The beneficiaries of the Free Healthcare programme include pregnant women, lactating mothers, children under five, persons living with disabilities, and survivors of Ebola and COVID-19.
According to NMSA, deliveries will be made to 24 government hospitals, selected private and faith-based hospitals, and all 16 District Medical Stores, with onward distribution to Primary Health Units (PHUs) nationwide. The commodities, valued at approximately USD 1.5 million, are being provided with support from the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), UNICEF, and the Government of Sierra Leone.
The National Medical Supply Agency, which is mandated by law to procure, warehouse, and distribute medicines and medical supplies nationwide, carries out four Free Healthcare distributions every year to strengthen health service delivery and ensure citizens have access to life-saving treatments at no cost.
The agency has issued a stern warning that Free Healthcare commodities are not for sale. It cautioned that anyone caught selling them will face severe penalties under the law. NMSA further called on the public, health workers, and partners to support in monitoring and safeguarding the supplies so they reach the intended beneficiaries.
