President Julius Maada Bio has expressed his profound sadness at the passing of Dr. James Sanpha Koroma, the founder of Union Trust Bank (UTB), who died on September 28, 2025, at the age of 79.
In a condolence message, President Bio honored Dr. Koroma as a pivotal figure in the nation’s development.
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. James Sanpha Koroma, a highly esteemed banker and a remarkable Sierra Leonean who dedicated his life to serving his country in many capacities,” the President stated.
He further emphasized the lasting impact of Dr. Koroma’s work, saying, “His unwavering belief in Sierra Leone and his efforts to positively transform countless lives will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Koroma family during this difficult time.”
Dr. Koroma was a renowned leader in Sierra Leone’s financial, educational, and public sectors. His most significant legacy is the founding of Union Trust Bank Limited in 1995, which became the nation’s first indigenous commercial bank.
As its Founder and Chief Executive Officer until his passing, he was widely recognized for his visionary leadership and his distinctive, ever-present bow tie.
Under his guidance, UTB became a cornerstone of the national economy and a champion for youth employment, recruiting and training graduates from local universities.
Among his many honors, Dr. Koroma was awarded the national distinction of Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel (GCOR) in 2007.
