Kono District residents recently received advanced surgical care as Deputy Chief Medical Officer (Clinical), Dr. Mustapha Kabba, completed a medical outreach providing free minimally invasive lung surgeries, known as Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS).

This initiative was made possible through a partnership with the internationally renowned Diego Gonzalez Rivas Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting minimally invasive thoracic surgery in resource-limited settings worldwide.

VATS allows surgeons to operate on the lungs and chest cavity through small incisions aided by a video camera. This modern approach significantly reduces recovery time, post-operative complications, and hospital stays compared to traditional open chest surgery.

Until now, such procedures have rarely been available in Sierra Leone, especially in rural districts like Kono.

Beyond treating patients, the collaboration focuses on building local capacity for the future, ensuring sustainable access to specialized surgical care.

The Diego Gonzalez Rivas Foundation, named after the Spanish surgeon who popularized single-port VATS, has carried out similar humanitarian missions across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Its work in Sierra Leone marks a major step forward for thoracic care in West Africa.
