Sierra Leone’s national football team, the Leone Stars, significantly ramped up training on Monday at SKD Stadium, preparing for a critical World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso on Wednesday.

The team needs a victory to keep its hopes of advancing to the continental playoffs alive.

The national squad focused on sharpening tactical plays and building team cohesion during the intensive session. The camp received a boost with the arrival of players Abu Dumbuya and Samuel Gandi, who reportedly integrated seamlessly and matched the high energy of their teammates.

The match against Burkina Faso is a “do-or-die encounter” for Sierra Leone’s World Cup qualification dream.

The path to qualification is narrow but clear. Sierra Leone currently sits in third place in their group with 12 points, three points behind second-place Burkina Faso, who have 15.

For the Leone Stars to overtake their rivals, they must first defeat Burkina Faso on Wednesday. A win would level both teams on 15 points, pushing the tiebreaker to goal difference, where Burkina Faso currently holds an advantage, meaning a strong offensive performance is crucial.

Following that, Sierra Leone must secure another victory in their final group match against Djibouti to reach 18 points. Their fate also depends on the result of Burkina Faso’s final game against Ethiopia; the Stallions must drop points for Sierra Leone to have a chance at finishing second.

Only the four best second-placed teams from all the qualifying groups will advance to the continental playoff, adding another layer of competition to the final standings.

The mood in the Leone Stars camp is one of quiet determination as they prepare for what promises to be the most defining 90 minutes of their qualifying campaign.
