The Deputy Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Hindowa Buakai Bindi, has highlighted significant progress made under President Julius Maada Bio’s administration in advancing the rights and welfare of women and children across Sierra Leone.

Speaking at the recently concluded Civic Day Series in Bo District, Deputy Minister Bindi outlined key achievements that demonstrate the government’s continued commitment to gender equality and child protection.

He noted that the administration has shown strong leadership in promoting women’s empowerment through both legislative and institutional reforms. Among the major milestones he cited were the enactment of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act and the adoption of a new National Gender Policy.

To ensure effective implementation of these initiatives, Bindi disclosed that gender desks have been established in all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to enhance women’s participation in decision-making processes and ensure their issues receive priority attention.

“This is to ensure women participate in the decision-making process and to specifically protect and promote women’s affairs in the office,” Bindi stated.

He further hailed a historic breakthrough in gender representation within the security sector, noting the appointment of Lieutenant Colonel Alice Koria Sesay as Sierra Leone’s first-ever female army commander a milestone he described as a reflection of the expanding opportunities available for women under the country’s progressive gender policies.

Turning to children’s welfare, the Deputy Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to safeguarding child rights, referencing the Child Rights Act 2024 and the introduction of a new Alternative Care Policy designed to phase out traditional orphanages and replace them with temporary care centers. The policy aims to reintegrate children into their families and communities within six months.

Bindi concluded by emphasizing that these combined efforts represent a significant stride toward achieving greater equality, empowerment, and protection for women and children nationwide.
