Residents of the Guinea Base-Reservation community in Kenema are raising urgent concerns following the discovery of a decomposing corpse beneath a local bridge, sparking fears of a potential public health crisis.
Passersby first noticed the body, believed to be that of an unidentified man, early Sunday morning after being drawn by a strong, foul odor. According to James M. Vangahun, Vice President of the KOSA Class of 2008, the community immediately alerted the relevant authorities. However, as of Tuesday morning, the body had yet to be collected.
“The situation is unbearable,” Mr. Vangahun said. “The smell is spreading across the neighborhood, and residents are concerned it could lead to disease outbreaks.”
Health experts in Kenema have echoed these fears, warning that decomposing human remains can pose serious sanitation and health risks, particularly in densely populated areas. Exposure to such biohazards without timely intervention can lead to the spread of infectious diseases and contaminate nearby water sources.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Mr. Vangahun called for immediate action, urging authorities to swiftly remove the corpse and investigate the identity and cause of death.
“This is not just about one person’s death. It is about public safety,” he emphasized.
The Guinea Base-Reservation community is appealing to local government, health officials, and law enforcement to prioritize the matter before the situation worsens.
