Justice Isata Sellu Tucker of the High Court in Freetown has sentenced Abubakarr Sesay, a known kush dealer, to ten (10) years imprisonment for unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.
The convict was found guilty of being in possession of 60.5 grams of kush without lawful authority, contrary to Section 8(a) of the National Drugs Control Act of 2008 (Act No. 10 of 2008).
According to the indictment, the incident occurred on 27th October 2024 in Freetown, where Sesay was arrested with the illegal substance. During his first court appearance, the accused pleaded guilty, admitting to the offence and appealed to the court for leniency.
In her ruling, Justice Tucker acknowledged the convict’s decision to accept responsibility and his plea for mercy but emphasized that drug-related offences have become rampant and destructive in Sierra Leone. She stressed that the judiciary must send a strong message of deterrence to those engaged in such acts.
Consequently, she sentenced Abubakarr Sesay to ten years imprisonment at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown. The court also ordered that the confiscated kush be forfeited to the state and destroyed by the relevant authorities.
Justice Tucker concluded by advising the convict to learn from his mistakes and desist from illegal activities after serving his jail term.
