Lawyer  Yada Williams, a senior member of Sierra Leone’s judiciary, has accused a Road Safety Corps officer, identified as Barrie, of attempting to collect a bribe while issuing a traffic fine along Wilkinson Road.

According to Williams, in a social media post, the officer demanded Le 250,000 as a bribe instead of issuing the lawful Le 400,000 fine, despite being informed of Williams’ connection with the law. Williams said he immediately reported the incident to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), describing the officer’s conduct as “predatory” and “a disgrace with no place in public service.”

In response, the Director of Road Safety and Enforcement of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) told Liberty Online TV that the allegations are “baseless.” He stated that Williams was driving an unregistered and unlicensed vehicle, which violates the law, and that Barrie issued a legal fine of Le 400,000.

The director confirmed that all payment receipts from Williams were with the SLRSA and had been forwarded to the ACC for verification. He emphasized that the fines are legal and subject to audits by both internal and external auditors of the Authority.

He concluded that Williams must provide evidence that Barrie collected an additional Le 250,000 after the initial fine payment, for which receipts already exist.
