The Head of Media and Public Relations for the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Brima Kamara, has stated that he does not have the final details regarding the man believed to be Jos Leijdekkers, one of Europe’s most wanted fugitives, reportedly sighted in Sierra Leone.

Speaking to journalists, ACP Kamara said that while the matter has attracted major public and international attention, the case is being handled at a government-to-Government level. He emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that the Sierra Leone Police is cooperating with relevant authorities to establish the true identity of the individual in question.

“I don’t know the final details about him,” ACP Kamara said. “Work is ongoing at the Government level to clarify the situation and determine the facts.”

Earlier, Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu had confirmed that the Sierra Leone Police were on the lookout for the alleged fugitive after reports circulated online suggesting that Leijdekkers, also known by the alias “Bolle Jos”, might be in the country.

However, according to the SLP’s Open-Source Investigation Unit, the man alleged to be Leijdekkers is Omar Sheriff, a different individual altogether. The police chief assured that his team is working with international partners to verify all available information before making any definitive statement.

The name Jos Leijdekkers has long been associated with major organized crime networks in Europe, and he has been listed among the continent’s most wanted individuals by several law enforcement agencies. Reports of his possible presence in Sierra Leone sparked widespread speculation and prompted swift action from local authorities.

While investigations continue, the Sierra Leone Police have called for public calm and urged citizens to avoid spreading unverified information, stressing that official updates will be provided as soon as credible details are confirmed. “The Sierra Leone Police will continue to collaborate with international partners to ensure that our country is not used as a safe haven for any criminal fugitives,” ACP Kamara reaffirmed.

The situation remains under close review as both local and international law enforcement agencies work together to verify the true identity of the man in question.
