Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Hon. Dr. Isata Mahoi, met with Iceland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Borgarður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, in Reykjavik to strengthen bilateral cooperation on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The engagement marked a significant step forward in global gender advocacy, as Minister Gunnarsdóttir formally invited Dr. Mahoi to serve as Co-Chair at the upcoming Global Forum for Women Leaders. The invitation underscores Sierra Leone’s growing profile in championing gender-inclusive policies and advancing women’s leadership on the international stage.
During the meeting, both Ministers held constructive discussions on key issues, including the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, economic empowerment, and human capital development. Dr. Mahoi highlighted Sierra Leone’s strategic focus on supporting women entrepreneurs, anchored in the country’s national development framework known as the Five Big Game Changers with Human Capital Development at its core.
“Sierra Leone is committed to building inclusive systems that empower women economically and socially,” said Dr. Mahoi. “We believe that partnerships like this one with Iceland are vital to accelerating progress on gender equality.”
Minister Gunnarsdóttir echoed the sentiment, expressing Iceland’s readiness to collaborate more deeply with Sierra Leone in areas such as entrepreneurship, education, and peacebuilding. Both Ministers agreed to explore joint initiatives that promote women’s participation in decision-making and strengthen institutional frameworks for gender equity.
The bilateral meeting reaffirmed the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs’ dedication to forging global partnerships that champion the rights of women and children.
As both nations continue to lead by example, their collaboration sets a powerful precedent for inclusive development and international solidarity.
