The Ministry of Health on 29 November 2025 officially launched the District Spotlight initiative in Kailahun, marking a major step in government efforts to strengthen the national health system and accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.
The launch, held as part of the Nationwide Health Train Campaign 2025, was led by the Deputy Minister of Health I, Dr. Charles Senessie, following the introduction of the initiative by Minister of Health Austin Demby, PhD, MPH.
The event drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, with Dr. Senessie delivering the keynote address and outlining the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the district.
He highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure, medical equipment, and workforce training, citing recent improvements in hospitals, clinics, and mobile health services aimed at expanding access and enhancing quality of care.
The District Spotlight initiative will conduct a comprehensive assessment of key health indicators and service delivery points across Kailahun.
The assessment will cover hospitals and peripheral health units to determine whether facilities meet national standards and to identify gaps requiring targeted interventions. The initiative is expected to provide a clear, evidence-based roadmap for upgrading services and ensuring consistent, high-quality care across all levels of the health system.
Key focus areas announced at the launch include:
Infrastructure upgrades to improve facility safety and patient flow
Provision of essential medical equipment to strengthen diagnostic and treatment capacity
Training and deployment of a qualified health workforce to address human resource shortages
Expansion of mobile health services to reach remote and underserved communities
These priorities are designed to work together to reduce service delivery bottlenecks and improve overall health outcomes across the district.
During his visit, Dr. Senessie also inspected several local health facilities and urged strict adherence to national standards. He emphasized that monitoring and evaluation will be critical to the District Spotlight initiative, with regular assessments guiding progress tracking, resource allocation, and accountability at facility and district levels.
“I feel honored to stand here today and give the keynote address at such an important occasion. This is a continuation of the work we have been doing across the country supporting facilities, improving services, and providing the necessary expertise to strengthen our healthcare system,” Dr. Senessie said.
The Ministry reaffirmed that no district will be left behind in the rollout of the District Spotlight initiative. Officials stressed that the program is part of a broader national strategy to ensure that quality health services are available to everyone, everywhere, and to close persistent gaps in access and service quality that hinder progress toward UHC.
Following the launch, technical teams will begin baseline assessments of facilities and health indicators across Kailahun.
The findings will guide immediate remedial actions as well as longer-term investments. The Ministry noted that outcomes from the District Spotlight will inform national planning and resource mobilization to ensure scalable improvements in other districts.
