In his capacity as Chairperson of ECOWAS, President Julius Maada Bio convened an Extraordinary Virtual Summit of Heads of State and Government today to urgently assess the political crisis in Guinea-Bissau.
The session follows the November 26 coup, in which a faction of the Guinea-Bissau military seized power just as the country was preparing to announce the results of its closely contested presidential election. Incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and senior government officials were arrested, drawing condemnation from regional and international bodies.
At the summit, ECOWAS leaders reiterated their commitment to constitutional governance and democracy. President Bio called for the swift restoration of constitutional order and the unconditional release of all detained political figures.
“The eyes of West Africa and the world are on Guinea-Bissau,” President Bio declared. “ECOWAS must act decisively to guarantee peace, stability, and respect for citizens’ will.”
Leaders also discussed deploying ECOWAS mediation teams, coordinating with the African Union, and exploring diplomatic and economic measures to deter further unconstitutional takeovers in the region.
The summit concluded with a binding declaration demanding the reinstatement of the legitimate electoral process, full respect for human rights, and a firm commitment to disengage from military rule.
