The First Lady of Sierra Leone, Fatima Maada Bio, has emphasized the central role of the Secretary General in the effective administration of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), calling for stronger collaboration and deeper understanding of the party’s constitution.
Speaking as keynote speaker at the SLPP Women’s Council celebration, held in honour of Hawa Foray, the newly elected National Women’s Leader, the First Lady reaffirmed the women’s wing’s commitment to supporting Foray’s leadership. She also extended appreciation to the party’s Secretariat for its continued service.
Mrs. Bio used the occasion to clarify what she described as a widespread misunderstanding about party hierarchy and constitutional roles. She noted that in political parties around the world, the Secretary General remains the most powerful administrative figure.
“When you talk about a political party, once you have chosen the leader, the most powerful person in the party is the Secretary General,” she stated. “The Secretary General will make you or spoil you. Any chairman who wants to succeed must work hand in hand with the Secretary General.”
She stressed that no official communication is valid without the signature of the Secretary General, underscoring the constitutional mandate of that office.
The First Lady also criticised what she called a culture of “photocopying but not studying,” arguing that many internal disputes arise because members fail to read and understand the party’s constitution.
According to her, the Secretary General, referred to as the “pen pusher” of the party takes instructions directly from the Leader of the Party, who guides strategic decisions. The Secretary General, she added, then communicates these directives to the rest of the party structure.
