A delegation from QCell Mobile Company held a strategic engagement with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, to discuss a potential partnership aimed at enhancing communication within the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).
During the meeting, QCell Sales Officer, Madam Mama Conteh, stated that the engagement was initiated on the advice of the company’s Chairman, Mr. Mohamed Jah, to explore the feasibility of extending QCell’s Closed User Group (CUG) programme to the SLP. She highlighted that QCell has successfully implemented similar initiatives for security forces in The Gambia and expressed the company’s interest in replicating the model in Sierra Leone.
Madam Conteh explained that the CUG programme is designed to improve internal communication among police personnel, thereby supporting operational efficiency and service delivery. She emphasised that effective communication remains critical to policing and public safety.
Adding further details, Head of Corporate Sales, Madam Mariama Jalloh, revealed that if negotiations succeed, QCell would offer two months of free calls to all subscribers on the CUG platform, as well as one month of free data. She also noted that the company’s post-paid services could be particularly beneficial for senior officers within the police hierarchy.
IGP Sellu welcomed the proposal and commended QCell for the initiative. However, he acknowledged a key challenge: not all police personnel currently use QCell SIM cards. He also noted that the SLP already operates a CUG arrangement with another mobile network.
The IGP suggested that any potential collaboration could start with senior officers and gradually extend to lower ranks. He directed the Head of Police Media, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Brima Kamara Esq., to serve as the focal person to liaise with QCell and explore ways to sensitise police personnel on the proposed initiative.
