The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has deployed two tow trucks along major highways linking Freetown to the rural districts in an effort to reduce road traffic accidents and improve safety during the festive season.

The deployment, which covers the Masiaka-Mile 91 corridor and the Gbere-Makeni corridor, was announced by the Management of the SLRSA, led by its Executive Director, Mr. James Baggie Bio. The move is aimed at promptly removing broken-down and stationary vehicles that often obstruct traffic and pose serious risks to road users.

Speaking on the deployment, Mr. Bio said that a significant number of accidents recorded on the two corridors are caused by vehicles that are left unattended on the roadway. “A good number of accident cases reported are as a result of stationary vehicles along these two corridors. We have a duty to act, and we must act swiftly,” he said.

The Executive Director explained that the tow trucks are fully equipped and staffed with trained personnel who will monitor the highways and respond quickly to incidents to ensure that stalled vehicles are cleared without delay.

The Deputy Executive Director and Head of Operations, Ms. Josie Abraham Scott-Manga, said the tow trucks will be actively stationed along the two corridors throughout the festive period. She noted that their presence is intended to ensure the free flow of traffic and provide safer travel for commuters heading to various destinations across the country.

Ms. Scott-Manga said the intervention is part of broader institutional reforms and operational improvements being implemented by the SLRSA since the appointment of the current leadership. She added that these measures are focused on reducing road traffic crashes and improving overall road safety nationwide.

She also urged members of the public to report emergencies by calling the SLRSA toll-free line, 844. “We have dedicated staff manning the call center on a 24/7 basis,” the Deputy Executive Director said.

The SLRSA says the deployment reflects its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and promoting safer road use, particularly during periods of increased travel such as the festive season.
