The student community in Sierra Leone has been plunged into mourning following the confirmed death of Sallay Sankoh, the Financial Secretary of the Western Area Rural District Students’ Union (WARDSU), who passed away in a fatal road accident.

Sankoh, a graduate of the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), was reportedly traveling from Freetown to the Kono District to participate in the Kono Students Union election when the tragedy occurred.

According to reports, the vehicle she was traveling in, bearing registration number AMO 863, was involved in a collision that claimed her life.

The Western Area Rural District Students’ Union issued a formal statement confirming the loss. Amb. Ibrahim John Sesay, the Public Relations Officer for WARDSU, described the event as a heartbreaking moment for the union.

“She was more than a leader—she was a pillar of strength, a voice of reason, and a selfless servant who gave her time, energy, and heart to the progress of our union,” Sesay stated.

The union described Sankoh as a “dependable colleague and true friend,” noting that her dedication and humility would be part of her lasting legacy.

“Words cannot fully express the pain of this loss, but we take comfort in the beautiful legacy she leaves behind,” the statement read.

Sankoh was among thousands of students who were honored during the University of Sierra Leone’s recent graduation events.

According to the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Prof. Aiah Lebbie, a total of 5,301 students graduated during the two-day ceremony held on December 3 and 4, 2025.

Condolences have begun pouring in for the Sankoh family, the IPAM alumni community, and the members of WARDSU as they grapple with the sudden loss of a prominent student leader.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
