The National Public Health Agency (NPHA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) issued a joint statement on Friday, January 9, 2026, confirming an active outbreak of cutaneous ulcers in the Bombali District, Northern Province.
Health authorities detailed that the spread of the infection had since been detected in the Kayassic Community of Safroko Limba Chiefdom on November 17, 2025. The outbreak, caused by the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi, has affected 267 people across 27 communities, primarily children between the ages of 5 and 15.
Furthermore, of the 267 suspected cases, 96 have been confirmed through laboratory testing. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported, and 150 individuals have already recovered. Health officials are currently conducting active follow-up for 211 close contacts to curb further transmission.

The data shows a slight prevalence in males, who represent 56% of those infected. Symptoms of the disease include Painful skin ulcers, typically found on the arms and legs. Swollen lymph nodes (regional lymphadenopathy) near the site of the sores. and Mild constitutional symptoms, such as low-grade fever or fatigue.
Despite the painful nature of the ulcers, officials emphasized that no severe cases requiring hospitalization have been recorded thus far.
Prof. Foday Sahr, Executive Director of the NPHA, assured the public that the outbreak is under control. The agency has activated comprehensive response protocols, including Community-based management and clinical care at local health facilities. Environmental decontamination in affected areas. Training for healthcare workers on wound care and hygiene.
Public Health is urging residents to take the following precautions, report immediately any suspicious skin lesions should be shown to a health worker, practice hygiene, by washing hands frequently and keep wounds clean and covered.
They warned against sharing of personal items like towels, sponges, or clothing. and follow guidance, by cooperating with community health volunteers and adhere to infection control measures.
