The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) announced that a major transmission line failure has caused a large-scale power outage across several communities in the Western Area.
In a public notice issued on January 11, 2026, EDSA stated the outage is due to a faulty transmission line between the Blackhall Road and Roportee substations.
The disruption has cut off electricity to a large portion of the capital’s East End, impacting residential neighborhoods as well as key commercial areas.
According to the EDSA, the affected communities include the Roportee, Kuntoloh, Brima Lane, and Calabatown communities. Also impacted are the Wellington Industrial Zone, the entire Wellington community, Jui, Mongegba, Waterloo, and the entire far east of Freetown.
EDSA officials confirmed that technical teams are currently on-site working to locate the specific fault and conduct repairs. The authority estimates that power will be fully restored by the close of business on Monday, January 12, 2026.
“We appreciate your patience as we work to restore electricity supply,” the EDSA Communications unit stated, apologizing for the inconvenience caused.
The outage highlights ongoing challenges within the national grid as authorities work to address infrastructure reliability.
