The Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Sierra Leone Police and the LAWYERS Organization have renewed their commitment to closer collaboration aimed at protecting the rights of women and addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) across the country.

The renewed partnership followed a courtesy and collaboration meeting held at the FSU Headquarters in Freetown, where FSU leadership and representatives of the LAWYERS Organization met to reinforce institutional cooperation and improve coordinated responses to SGBV cases.

During the meeting, the newly appointed President of the LAWYERS Organization, Ms. Melissa Sesay, thanked the FSU for the warm reception and formally introduced her executive team. She reaffirmed the organization’s readiness to support the FSU’s mandate and outlined its key roles, including promoting the rights of women and children, providing legal support to SGBV survivors, and working with law enforcement and the judiciary to enhance access to justice.

Ms. Sesay emphasized the need for continuous capacity building for FSU personnel, judicial officers, and other stakeholders involved in handling SGBV matters. She also revealed plans to support the establishment of Sexual Offences Model Courts in Falaba, Kailahun, and Kenema districts, as well as efforts to review and strengthen existing SGBV Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Responding, the Head of the FSU, Superintendent Mohamed S. Y. Mansaray, assured the delegation of the Unit’s unwavering commitment to combating SGBV nationwide. He welcomed the renewed collaboration and stressed the importance of sustained partnerships in strengthening protection mechanisms for women and children.

The meeting ended with both institutions reaffirming their shared resolve to deepen cooperation and enhance justice delivery systems for victims and survivors of SGBV in Sierra Leone.
